What do you do when a trash bag is so full you can’t fit it into the garbage can — or a town landfill is overflowing and polluting water supplies?
……..Call a “trashologist”!!
In “Garbage Is My Bag“, an award winning performance program for school audiences, Jack Golden is the comedic “expert”, Dr. T., who delves into a mountain of trash — and an even bigger bag of vaudeville and circus tricks — in search of answers to these questions. With a “Ph.D. in Garbology”, a zany and irresistible personality and a marvelous Trash-to-treasure-o-matic recycling machine, he juggles and jokes his way through a world of waste. Dr. T delights his audiences while sharing his knowledge that rubbish is a resource that is just too good to throw away.
Garbage Is My Bag is a fast paced blend of mime, comedy, song, circus skills and dramatic story. Since 1989, it has helped hundreds of thousands of children around the country explore serious issues about our wasteful habits in the hilarious context of a professionally staged variety show. The program is terrific for grades K-8.
Jack Golden in the role of Dr. T uses the power of live performance to engage children with facts about our solid waste problems and a positive model of how to solve them. Emphasizing recycling and waste reduction, Garbage Is My Bag presents children with rewarding and important ways that they can directly contribute to their home, school and community environment. The goal of the program is to strengthen new attitudes and responsibilities toward our common resources in our homes, communities and worldwide.
Jack Golden, creator of “Garbage Is My Bag”, has been a professional variety artist since 1981. He’s performed with the world-famous Pickle Family Circus of San Francisco and the award-winning “New Vaudeville” comedy troupe, The Wright Brothers. Garbage Is My Bag was selected by the Environmental Protection Agency for its national EPA Administrators Award for solid waste programs.
Science and Theater
In addition to strengthening the attitudes of young people towards the environment, Garbage Is My Bag is also a piece of theater and using the power of live performance students will experience how theater in particular and the Arts in general can be used to communicate and express ideas in dynamic and compelling ways.
Because the program is funny and light hearted, it provides an environment conducive to learning. Laughter can be a surprisingly effective teacher.
Garbage Is My Bag is designed to meet many national and state learning standards for science and environmental studies. In addition, Garbage Is My Bag is also aligned with various national theater and arts standards.
In addition, workshops in physical theater including acting, mime, juggling, improvisation and circus skills are available. These workshops also focus on using these skills to communicate environmental messages.
